Creating an Artful Nursing Photo Shoot
Nursing your newborn is a significant experience in any breastfeeding mother’s life—it establishes a bond with your little one that only serves to enhance the joy of having a newborn to take care of.
Doing a nursing photo shoot is a great way to capture the beauty of new life and nursing, and mothers can have a token to keep and treasure for a long time to come.
When that little one is all grown up, you can have a gorgeous memoir to look back on and fully appreciate the wonder of having children.
The Perfect Setting
For an artistic nursing photo shoot, finding the right setting is key. Many photographers are content to do a studio photo session, with a suitable backdrop and stuffy props. However, I find that some of the most aesthetically intriguing settings are outdoors—there’s something about a natural process being surrounded by the beauty of nature that just pops!
Lighting, as any photographer knows, is crucial to getting great results. The natural lighting of the mid-day sun, or the golden hours of the sunset make for some beautiful shots.
A mother with her newborn child speaks of softness and grace—the lighting should mimic that. Warm hues of soft lighting is considerably more artsy than harsh white studio lighting.
With posing, you want to keep it natural. Babies fuss when they feed, it’s all part of the package. It’s ideal to have the little one snuggled up into his or her mother’s embrace as they breastfeed, but a little deviation from the norm isn’t unappealing—so what if the baby is grabbing at a tuft of his mommy’s hair? Natural imperfection can be beautiful too.
The important thing to keep in mind is to not limit yourself too much in the nursing photography session. While breastfeeding can be an important aspect of mother-baby bonding, there are many mothers who bottle feed—which doesn’t take anything away from the relationship.
A mother lovingly bottle-feeding her child can be just as artistic and entrancing as breastfeeding.
The best way to be sure that you get an artistic, aesthetically pleasing nursing photo shoot is to invest in a photographer who has the knowledge and the skills required at their disposal.
